Tell us a little bit about yourself, how long you’ve been in the lifestyle, where you’re based out of and how long have you been doing rope work?
I am ThePrurient on Fetlife and Instagram, and I live in the Northeast US, and I’ve been in the lifestyle for 11years Presidents Day weekend. I have also been doing rope for 11 years. Although there’s a lot of practice that’s been put into it I have had professional training. I started rope almost 11 years ago with a partner who had done
rope previously and was out of the scene for a while and came back into the scene. We went to DC WinterFire together and ended up taking a rope class. Ironically, I used nylon in the class which I hate nylon now, I wouldn’t touch it with a 10ft pole. We went to the event at night and saw a couple do a tie, which I later became friends with and it just kind of went from there… we started to look up rope classes and we found some bi- weekly rope classes in Baltimore and I studied under them for 2 years every other week and I studied under the person who taught those classes for and additional total of six years. I have studied under three Japanese masters, and a master from England
who is probably considered one of the best rope teachers in the world. I’ve taken classes from all over including Germany. Rope has taken me all over the country in 22 states, and outside in two other countries. After a while I started implementing the scenery in the background going all over the country looking for really cool spots to do
rope and have been fortunate enough to make friends with some urban explorers and implemented that into my work as well. Strangely enough most of my rope is not bedroom rope. It’s either for art or the challenge or to put people in pain, consensually of course. What kinds of different rope are available to be able to do these ties and with the variety out there what is the best type of rope for a beginner to start with?
I personally am bougie when it comes to rope so I use 6mm Ogawa ju that you have to order from Japan. It only comes in a 500 meter roll that is unfinished and I have to finish it myself. So my stuff is not convenient for someone who is brand new. There is other rope out there...You have synthetic rope, hemp, coconut or cotton. I do not personally like hemp or cotton because they do not have a lot of bend in them and the static weight limit is not very good. There is a blend of synthetic and hemp which is very strong and almost looks like natural fiber. Coconut is unrefined rope spun from the husk, It’s very scratchy very painful once on and the bottom moves, it comes in 4mm and 6mm. I use 6mm rope but most of the others are 7-8mm. I don’t like my rope that big. You can get rope at a couple places such as MyNawashi on etsy and Addict Dye rope, which you can find on Instagram. I recommend using natural fibers because it stays in place and grabs the skin well as to synthetic which doesn’t have any grab and will slip and slide on the skin. The benefit of synthetic is that you can utilize it in water as to natural fiber you can ruin your rope.

I do have my own rig in my house. It's pretty big and secure. It has 4 posts and it's reinforced with boards in the middle that I can put straps on. I use bamboo, I use a round four and 1/2 inch circumference bamboo and it's 6 feet long. That's what I use when I'm inside. When I’m outside my basics are a lot of nylon straps because like for
example when I went to do a shoot on a bridge in the last two years the closest point was 50 feet up so that means that I have to take some carabiners which I bring several of those as well and I play what I call ring toss which is where I have to throw it up and over whatever beam I can get to. For my outdoor shoots I do so I use a respirator because I go into some funky places and I've got sick before so I use a respirator. I have a blanket with me because it gets gross and my rope gets gross. I have an outside set of rope because even though I try my best the rope just gets gnarly gross. I bring a first aid kit with me just because I want to make sure that if anybody gets hurt we've got something to take care of them. I have shears with me, I typically do not cut rope unless someone is not breathing but if it was a situation where you know we're doing the shoot somebody comes after us in a threatening way I have to get a person out of there. And appropriate shoes, some places I go into have stuff all on the ground. For somebody who's starting out and trying to learn what is the best type of rope tie, would be simple and easy but still give them a good grasp on the basics of rope?
